The Age’s Senior Arts Writer Gabriella Coslovich tells it like it is.

Enough buck passing. Enough blaming the Howard Government. Enough faux “consulting”. Gillard (Fed Education), Garrett (Fed Arts), Batchelor (Vic Arts), Glyn Davis (Uni Melb) – SAVE VCA now for the students, the staff and for Australia’s arts economy.

If anyone is in any doubt about why the VCA deserves encouragement rather than money-grabbing back-stabbing go TONIGHT to see the final performance of GHETTO by final year acting and music students. An absolute triumph!

The Age has been a great supporter. But speaking with Richard Murphet at the opening of GHETTO I couldn’t help but agree that the media should be doing more to promote the WORK at the VCA to help garner support for its future.

Every time an article appears in the Age that is at all critical of the University of Melbourne, the Uni PR dept probably rings the editor and reminds them how much money the UoM spends on advertising in their paper. A spokesperson for UoM has actually stated in public that they can’t see why the Age carries such reports given the large advertising revenue that is at stake. It is a marvel then to see the occasional straight reporting get through to print. My thanks to the journalists.
