Last "VCA" Removed by Melbourne Uni

In a shocking display of senseless destruction, the last reference to the “Victorian College of the Arts” has been removed by Melbourne University at the St Kilda Road Campus.

Despite being in direct contravention of the Heads of Agreement than merged VCA and Uni of Melb (which safeguarded VCA’s name and logo), and despite contradicting University claims all changes would halt until the Discussion Paper process was completed, the sledgehammer approach of Melbourne University continues.

This is a heart rendering sight, but one that gives us renewed anger at Uni of Melb contempt for elites art education. It also displays how the University clearly has no fear of being held to account by either the State or Federal Governments.

So it’s up to us.

History has taught us that Uni of Melb only listen to bad publicity, so it’s time to fill their inbox with Discussion Paper submissions. SAVE VCA!

  1. The worst aspect of this is the dishonesty. I ask again – as this looks like heading for a new sign to incorporate ‘& M’ (at least) – since when was ‘Music’ not an integral part of ‘the Arts’?

  2. Jeannie Marsh

I agree with Ron – the implication that music is not one of the arts (as seen in the new name)shows a deep lack of understanding of fundamental aspects of the arts by the people orchestrating these changes. Every time I have seen the VCAM name written in the last year I have squirmed with frustration and anger, as it sums up so many of the problems: if the people pushing through the current changes don’t understand that music is one of the arts, how on earth can we trust them to know enough about the arts to manage the next stage in the life of VCA with knowledge, care, and understanding of the issues involved?
